Preventive Dentistry And Reduction Of Dental Anxiety In Children

As a family dentist in Pleasanton, I have been treating families since 1990 and consider this an essential aspect: making dental visits pleasant and non-traumatic for children. As a concerned dentist treating so many children who have dental anxiety. Dental anxiety is probably the most frequent complaint at my dental office. It is normal now for a child to be apprehensive about seeing the dentist, but I believe preventive dentistry plays an integral part in helping decrease that anxiety and set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

From the moment your child enters our office, I want them to feel at ease and comfortable. One of the most common culprits of dental anxiety is the fear of the unknown, so I make it a point to introduce them with care and friendliness to the dental environment. This way, their early experiences in the realm of dental health should be positive and reassuring.

Building Trust Through Regular Checkups

One of the best ways to help your child be comfortable with dental visits is through regular visits. These visits allow me to build a trusting relationship with your child. In many cases, having the children come in every six months for their checkups allows them to get used to the sights and sounds within the dental office, as well as the people. This alone can help to reduce the fear of the unknown.

At these visits, I explain what I am doing in a very simplistic way so your child will understand. For example, I refer to dental instruments as "tickle sticks" and suction as a "little vacuum." By reframing the experience in a non-threatening and fun way, the chances of your child remaining relaxed or even looking forward to coming into the office are pretty high.

The Power Of Early Education

Another important feature of preventive dentistry involves the education of a child in the very important aspects of dental health right from an early age. Grasping the reasons why teeth need to be taken care of, the child is bound to be more an active participant in their oral health.

This approach helps to get the parents involved with their children through brushing and flossing their teeth, including visiting the dentist. We reiterate this in the office with proper demonstrations of brushing and an explanation of a healthy diet that will keep the teeth strong. Early education helps to prevent cavities and other dental health problems and equips your child to take care of their own teeth.

Creating A Positive Association With The Dentist

Another manner in which preventive dentistry helps to reduce dental anxiety is by creating positive associations with the dentist. If a child regularly visits the dentist and sees that these visits are usually quick, easy, and even fun, they start to view the dentist's office as a friendly place rather than a scary one.

For example, we love reinforcing your child's successes-whether it's a cavity-free checkup or just for being brave during their visit. A little reward, such as a sticker or visiting our treasure chest, goes a long way toward your child's perception of their dental visits.

Preventing Dental Problems Before They Start

Of course, one of the most important parts of preventive dentistry is the upkeep of your child's teeth, and preventing problems from ever happening in the first place. When we can catch issues- like cavities- early, or even better, stop them from ever starting, then your child's dental visits are less likely to involve invasive treatments, which are a source of anxiety.

Regular cleaning, fluoride applications, and sealants are some of the preventive measures to help your child's teeth be in a good state. Keeping the mouth healthy prevents the more extended, bigger treatments that may create anxiety or cause discomfort.

I am committed to making every child in my practice comfortable and cared for. The confidence of preventive dentistry is not only based on healthy teeth but also on a lack of fear thereof. I wish to instill that confidence in your child so they can grow up with a positive attitude toward dental care and enjoy a healthy smile for life.
